Darwin Port is providing an opportunity to train towards a career as a Harbour Control Officer.

Harbour Control Officers operate Harbour Control including AIS, radar, VHF radio and other communication equipment. Harbour Control Officers also monitor and update shipping schedules, and plan and coordinate resource allocations utilising the Port Management System.

To be employed in this position you will have significant experience in sea going service, preferably in command; a sound maritime background; have excellent communication skills; strong attention to detail and strong skills in a range of technologies and electronic mediums.  Knowledge and understanding of the Port of Darwin is essential, and familiarity with Darwin Port facilities and operations would be highly regarded.

This position is being offered to allow an individual to develop skills and competency that will enable them to be employed as a Harbour Control Officer.

Harbour Control Officers operate a 24/7 rotating shift roster working 12-hour shifts.  The Trainee Harbour Control role will initially work regular office hours (Monday to Friday - 37.5 hours per week), but at the completion of training, which would typically be 12 months, the successful candidate will transition into the 12-hour rotating shift roster.  You will also need to be able to work relief 12 hour shifts as part of the on the job training, once a minimum level of on the job proficiency is achieved.
